Feminism in Politics

By Olivia Groom, A Mentor

While election season can seem discouraging to people all across America, it can specifically seem disheartening to young women interested in politics. Sitting down to look at a ballot filled with men may make you feel like it is impossible to reach your dreams, but I am here to remind you of some of the most recent influential women in politics.

When thinking about women in politics, Michelle Obama is one of the first that typically comes to mind. While First Lady might be her most popular title, she is also an attorney and author. Her goal of supporting women and their education has led her to create “Let Girls Learn" where she helps over 62 million girls further their education around the world. If that isn’t enough to convince you of her influential role in politics, she is also a bestselling author with the book Becoming about her journey through the White House.

Another woman that must be brought up when talking about feminism is Ruth Bader Ginsburg. In 1993 RBG became the second woman ever to serve on the US Supreme Court for which she held for twenty-five years. Throughout her career she fought for the rights of the LGBT community, undocumented people, and the disabled. One of the most important laws she passed was the fact that employees cannot discriminate against employees based on gender or reproductive purposes.

While there are few women in politics, they are mighty.

In conclusion, while there are few women in politics, they are mighty. Michelle Obama, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Martha Layne Collins, and the most recent Vice President Elect Kamala Harris are continuing to pave the way for women in history.
